I like capitalism. To me capitalism means that the government does way less regulation of the economy, and also does way less "using taxpayer money to assist private businesses". If corporations can't survive by providing value to customers on their own, they should fail.

New York looks poised to give the Buffalo Bills $850 million to help the team build a new $1.4 billion stadium. The proposed deal has renewed a debate about government's role in supporting private businesses. apne.ws/WmmIxoR

AGREED!!! What the US has now is Crony Capitalism....where "supported" corporations of the state take excess risk, as they know the govt (ie taxpayers) will bail them out. High returns to the owners, high losses to taxpayers. Its a racket!!! And THAT is what Fascism is

Unfortunately we have too much socialism for corporations where financial incentives are given to large corporations for many reasons. I believe this practice is hurting the average citizen and is one of the primary causes of the weath gap. Pure capitalism should be the goal.

In this case, it's about sports and building a NEW stadium. So the league and the billionaire owners should use their capital to build the stadiums. But also why should the government prioritize a new stadium over other needs? There's a lot of parts to consider here.

The other side of this is the benefits keeping that business there will bring to the region that pays them to stay. If investing $850M brings several $billion in additional tax revenue to the region then is it worth it?

It’s unfortunate we continue to subsidize businesses instead of letting them operate more independently. Fossil fuels, farming..two areas where subsidies could be eliminated.

Seems more like localities are competing for hosting an NFL team instead of a handout. Bills could threaten to go to another city that is willing to put up $$$. In other words it’s competition between cities that’s driving this.

I’d love to suggest reading ‘Capital’ by Pikkety and ‘Debt’ by Graeber. With all due respect I think that your idea of what capitalism is could use some nuance. On the other hand I totally agree that the Buffalo deal isn’t great - but it’s an excellent example of capitalism.

Governments with "Department of Economic Development" offices seem to be good at this. Even our local city here hands out money to landlords for development projects in weird ways. No need to, but they do.
