How concerned should I be about wasps? As in, how likely are they, actually, to sting you if you're just sitting there minding your own business?

We have a nest of giant brown paper wasps somewhere in our garden and they’re surprisingly chill, haven’t harassed us at all

That said a friend did accidentally stand on one and described the experience as painful as breaking a toe

I've only had one sting me. It landed on my leg, and I just stood there completely still thinking it'd do nothing, but instead it stung me for no reason and flew away.

They won't bother you, unless you bother them.
Unfortunately bothering them can consist of accidentally brushing one out of your hair, or as happened to one of my friends blinking when one lands next to your eye.

I walked outside to my backyard and one dive bombed into the back of my head and stung the shit out of me. I've had unprovoked attacks from wasps multiple times and almost died from a reaction on one occasion. You may need to apply a more flexible definition to "bothering" 😂

They will not sting you if you are minding your own business. If one lands on you, just let it fly away on its own, or it might think you're attacking. Do NOT step on a nest - if you do, run away as far and fast as you can.

One time a wasp sought out my daughter in a crowded public park and stung her in the hand for no reason

THE number one thing you can do is to NOT make eye contact with the wasp
Like don't try to assert dominance or anything, this won't end well

they are aggressive and will attack you if they think you’re attacking them
also if you smell fruity
