Is there an already-existing term for authority inflation, or where a sketchy source gets used by a slightly more authoritative source, which then gets used by a slightly more authoritative source, so that no one individual is stretching trust super far but it's bad in aggregate?

Great question! I know this happened in my case. Rumor and slander and outright fantasy from Italian sources got regurgitated by UK tabloids, then by more "trustworthy" media here, in the process making the fantasy of my doppelganger seem real. The Foxy Knoxy effect?

Not a bad term! Of course, anybody in the chain interested enough to track sources is going to unravel it...and affect to some degree the authoritativeness of previous sources.
