While I'm sympathetic to post rats, Holly touched on an important thing here. Often people lose touch with *why* trying to keep contact with reality is important, and forget the intense damage it can cause to yourself and others if you treat it as just an aesthetic.

sometimes you decide it matters more to you to figure out what the fuck is going on than it matters to you that you be able to rigorously justify your working model to people verbally and that it pattern match to a culturally overdetermined idea of what a valid model looks like

Key word is why, it is obvious that reality is important and acting according to reality is essential. But it is never bad to ask why, people who shouldn’t disincentives it.

But what is reality? We don't experience objective reality, we experience only our brain's reconstruction of it. Optimizing for the most accurate model of objective reality is not necessarily a goal worth striving for. You need a minimum level of accuracy, after that you can play
