There are a body of scholarly papers written about the potential of AI to be an existential threat. The people who are concerned are not morons, and are often high profile tech billionaires like Gates and Musk and high profile scientists like (previously) Hawking.

Knowing a bit about ML and especially about linear algebra, I think there are just a lot of low-hanging fruit. We haven't had any serious development of chemical weapons with modern tools (at least publicly).

the root problem that needs to be solved quickly is how do you structure a society where any one member can, on a whim, choose to destroy the species. it may not be a problem that can be solved.

They did it to show that the tool was powerful enough to be very dangerous in the hands of a bad actor, and the conclusion seemed to be "More ethics classes for science people please", so it's not all doom.
