> Maybe I’m jaded, but I think “only wanting intimacy with your partner for your entire life” is extremely, extremely rare. Surely this is actually extremely common? Otherwise polyamory would indeed be the norm. Most people are monogamous because they genuinely want it.

While that is true, it is also true that the majority of monogamous people realize that their long-term happiness is actually furthered by not succumbing to short-term admittedly pleasurable temptations/urges which would likely cause long-term strife with their partner

I personally find resisting cheating way easier than being jealous (which is in my opinion very natural) - but that's probably exactly the reason why I'm monogamous for 20 years (w kids) and other people are poly. Everybody's different.
