When talking to strangers, so you refer to your parents with "my" in front of it, like "my dad", or do you just say "dad"?

Sometimes I accidently use "my dad" when talking with my sister, and then pause uncomfortably

The my is implied so why would you say it? Your dad or Billy's dad is needed because it is needed to specify who you are talking about. "Got car washed today" implies that it is my car without having 'my' in front (assuming there isn't a predetermined context about the car).

Whoa. First time I’ve encountered this question outside of the comically long-standing bit of debate amongst myself and a couple of my friends. I’ve given it a lot of thought.

Without the "my", these words are used as names. They would be the same names that your friends call their parents as well. This context may help explain the usage. Keep in mind that you would capitalize Mom and Dad when used as names when writing.
I use "my", but then I've never called them Mom and Dad (we always used their first names).

Was deployed during my kids’ young childhood. When I came back, they always referred to my wife as “my mom” when talking to me. That’s how I knew I was an outsider to them.

Say my dad’s name until after he died. Now, I refer to him as my dad.
Always refer to my mum as my mum
A reading comprehension question. If you say, “It depends on the context,” then you did not read the question correctly.
