I don't know! I have some theories but they feel like just-so stories. My guess is that 'poly' has some overlap with 'queer', which for some reason has some overlap with 'fandom'

I think the common ground is weird people who don't have intimate platonic relationships and so they require a specific structure like a regular board game meetup (I'm somewhat describing myself here) or a poly relationship to satisfy this need

Isn’t it just autism spectrum? It seems to overlap with all of these. Neurotypicals aren’t usually inclined to approach relationships with systems, procedures, and pure reason. Board games and D&D have a broader appeal, but also index highly for autism.
