I think largely because it suggests that people in that group are doing something wrong if they don't live up to those stereotypes. It's like getting typecast. You could be getting typecast as the suave & amazing hero, but that can still suck if you want to do other roles

you mean like model minority stuff? it’s a stages of development thing, I think. Like first one wants any scrap of recognition one can get, however bad, however they get it. once they have some and they get used to it then they start demanding nuance. Which is progress imo

What about "positive" stereotypes about how women are more gentle / sensitive / pure, how we're better at caregiving, how valuable we are because we can give birth and men can't...?

My general take is that people who want less positive attention already have quite a bit to begin with, so their problems become amplified compared to the relatively connectionless people who want more, and this leads to a bias when estimating the amount people want on average.
