im confused, the study was correlative, not causal; male baboons with female 'friends' (who iirc groom in exchange for male protection of their infants from infanticide) probably are in more dominant positions, strong enough to protect the females, thus live longer

True—causal relationship isn’t established. But a long life isn’t always the best reprod. strategy for males, who can do well taking risks. Dominant males may be too busy to invest in friendships, which aren’t best reprod. bang for time/energy buck.
