Interesting post. Aella arrives at a raw number of 39k people trafficked yearly, which is close to the commonly cited 40k-50k. She then estimates that there are about 830k people who engage in prostitution. But now that 39k, which is 4.6% of 830k, seems too low to me.

A big caveat is that there’s really bad data here and a very lacking literature. Hence this estimate is very, very noisy and depends on a few things that are less than reliable. But to me it’s a decent back-of-the-envelope calculation given the very little info we have.

Yeah, it could perhaps be too high if it only included adults being literally forced into prostitution. But if it includes minors engaging in sex with adults for money, then my priors suggest that it should be higher than 5%, maybe closer to 10%. idk, perhaps I’m wildly off
