Work is the word people use for the stuff they don't want to do. There is a lot of stuff people enjoy doing or compulsively do that is useful. It is often not paid because people consider doing it a privilege or are so good that it feels like nothing to them. Preferences are key.

For many anti-work people work is not an activity but a way of relating to the activity. When seen in that light their view make more sense. The man stranded on an island isn’t a part of some sort of work related social structure and hence doesn’t “work” in the same sense.

I think many anti-work people are anti-work in the respect that their jobs lack any intricate depth of meaning, and are bossed by resentful bug-like managers. Bonus points if their job is serving the wealthy (hospitality, fine dining, cashier at high end clothing stores, etc)

The usual Marxist perspective is that labor is natural and good, but modern work alienates us from our labor and steals excess value. On a desert island, you would reap the benefits of your labor and trade on an equal basis with peers (until rents/slavery are reinvented)
