I think one of the most intense places this sort of situation can go is when it's your responsibility to tell someone else they are wrong about their consent having been violated. Things always take a turn for the worse at that point, and were probably already pretty bad.

This is excellent analysis. Though a lot of these problems arise from the fragility of modern young people. There's no more running interference like "Susan, be sure to get Dave drunk so he's not grouchy"– no one will take that kind of responsibility for each other.
