it occurs to me that a lot of what now gets labeled “cringe” is stuff that would have been labeled “gay” in a more anti-gay era

Trying to kill cringe culture was a mistake. We just made it stronger. Now instead of just calling things cringe people do mental gymnastics to contrive reasons why liking them is a Serious Moral Transgression and not shunning anyone who does makes you guilty by association
