Most experiments with polyamory I personally know about ended the same way. For a time it's new and exciting but after a while they just couldn't deny anymore than one person was more special than all the others. It works for some people but most of us seem to desire to pair up.

this feels extremely compatible with polyamory to me. polyamory isn't inherently "you always fuck multiple ppl with no preference between them". most poly ppl I know have main pairs!

That's not the concept I've encountered. The people I know tried to have an equal threeway relationship, but in both cases it ended up with one participant (correctly) feeling more left out as time went on. I know people in successful poly relationships online but not in person.
