a "for the record" thread to clarify my views on wealth/labor/rich etc. 1. working very hard is not in itself enough to get rich 2. multiplying your wealth is way more effective if you started out with some wealth 3. people *way* overestimate and misunderstand the role of luck

I only disagree with 4. There are plenty of people who get paid waaaaaay more than the value they create based on their connections or the perceived value that they create.

Fully agree with all points, except 5. Social class as a barrier for wealth creation has been steadily eroded by capitalism. People tend to *overestimate* it. Wealth creation by poor intelligent immigrants in US happening on a grand scale. It has become almost a norm.(1/x)

Controversial topics will generate lots of opinions. You have to sift through the responses and see what angle they are filtered through. For the most part most of the empirical data is pretty substantiating towards your assertions.

People get paid according to the value they create *and* control. Many top performing employees are underpaid (especially early in career) and plenty of artists/creatives create lots of value but fail to capture it due to either disinterest, naïveté, or other reasons

4. People get paid based on the value they capture not create. There are open source devs like Linus who have generated more value than billion dollar companies but i think he gets paid just a Sr. Engineer salary.
