Have you considered that people who get rich are just better than you? Obviously other factors are at play too, but anybody who's launched themselves up a tier in wealth usually are brilliant, bold risk takers, work super hard, and create way more value for the world than you do.

I have considered it, but I also know a -lot- of people who are rich because they had a permanent and substantial safety net letting them take those risks, or lots of connections from family wealth connecting them to opportunities most people never have.

I do agree! I also know many more people with a substantial safety net who never took those risks. A small % of safety net people actually become great; most poor ppl wouldn't become great if they also had a safety net.

Aside from wondering what your overall argument here actually is, I’m also wondering if there is a debate as to what the definition of value is. If we’re speaking anecdotally, which is all I currently see in your argument, I’ve seen many non wealthy people create great value.

Yes, and some would, so it is both socially valuable and fair (not to mention obviously humane) to give them publicly what others received privately

This essentially translates as follows: some rich people are successful with safety nets, and some poor people would be successful if they had safety nets. It's not clear to me how this supports your original point.

So what you’re saying is that the safety net is necessary but not sufficient? It sounds like we should make sure everybody has the same safety net then so we can maximize the population of people who can create something amazing.

Just so we're clear this is an argument against envy, not against redistribution (which tries to address social wellbeing unreachable by "value creation" processes)
