When you make facial expressions, how much of it is a conscious move, like where you're deciding to make an expression now, vs. totally subconscious, they sort of happen 'to' you without conscious choice?

Interesting. I feel like it's totally subconscious in all ordinary situations, except rare occasions when I'm performing in some sense (on a web meeting and trying to show I'm paying attention).

Most of the time I'm aware to some extent (the more formal or anxiety inducing a situation, the more conscious I am) but the movement is subconscious and sometimes I'm surprised to catch my face in the mirror or when little muscles in my cheeks start to hurt

Extremely unconscious because I have emotional repression of the cognitive aspect of emotion. Also my partner is hypervigilant from trauma so she can see microexpressions like the show Lie to Me. So, she can use them to predict emotions I'm not yet aware of.

I have aspergers, so I do tend to consciously present what I think is the appropriate expression, and slightly exaggerate all expressions.
