Programmer/software engineer friends, is it true in your experience that for your coworkers, hiring standards are lowered if they're women?

this question brought to you by a friend helpfully suggesting I could go into programming as a backup job, and when I was like I don't know how to program he shrugged and was like "you have tits, they're desperate for anything with tits"

Not true in startup land where I've worked. At a small scale, we need (or more accurately, want) everyone to make significant contributions. That being said, I'd totally hire someone like you. Not because of your tits / XX status, but because you have a great mind.

Maybe you'd pick up programming super fast. But if not, you'd probably make a great data analyst, product manager and after a bit of time, people leader. Solid bet. A tech company would be lucky to have you (and again, not because of your tits/XX status).

I'm assuming his mention of tits didn't offend you. But it does f*cking piss me off. I have experienced gender bias in my career - like people simply not believing that I've built impressive tech all by my little self, or that I've effectively lead technology teams.
