I'm a little confused by the taboo rating for each one. Is that just based on societal opinions of the fetishes or were the people surveyed also asked about how taboo they thought their fetishes were?

For taboos to work at all people have to be on pretty much the same page about their existence and intensity. They do work, so we all know the hierarchy.

They only have to be on the same page within their social group. What is considered taboo to right Auth wouldn't necessarily be considered taboo by lib left.

There’s a difference between “taboo” and “disapproved of by many millions.” Kissing a member of your own sex in the town square in West Texas might still get you beaten up, but no one in that town would *call* it taboo.

I measured the taboos by giving people a prompt of "how much would you *not like* to announce to other people you had this fetish? E.g., telling your grandmother, or announcing to a crowd of strangers, or all your friends knowing"
