You know those scenes in fantasy/SF books where the hero needs a major project managed, so they appoint a random companion or acquaintance to be in charge of it, who's flattered and surprised by the responsibility? And then it actually gets managed just fine? Yeah? NO.

yeah i used to have some idea that it wasn't hard to get tasks done reliably? You could just hire ppl? And they'd be reasonable about it and mostly competent, by default?
but turns out people by default are just really bad at doing stuff.
You can pay people to do stuff, but you can basically never pay people to care
