In the gay debate, I don't see "is being gay a choice" as relevant to gay acceptance. Who tf cares, accept them regardless! Similarly, I don't view "are trans ppl autogynephiles" as relevant to trans acceptance. Who tf cares, accept them regardless! The question is a distraction.

I think you are arguing against a Christian talking point. If it wasnt a choice, then it cant really be a sin so if you can convince them of that then they have to re-evaluate their interp of the text, which has been done with success in the church i think

For sure. Whatever we think about the "being gay is a choice" thing, it's a bad idea to get caught up on that as the debate topic. It's a much harder argument to make than "we should accept gay people either way" and gives false legitimacy to the conservative position

Should we treat "them" like "everyone else" is an interesting question. Its interesting to consider that "everyone else" doesn't actually exist as a group that all get treated the same way.

That only makes sense in a purely individualistic framework. From a societal perspective, both carry negative social externalities, so the subjective onus of conforming to "standard lifestyle" matters in the calculus of acceptability.

Rhetorical device: flip it and reverse it. "Did you choose to be a cis- hetero-arse, or were you born one?" 😈 Tbh I think ppl who get hung up on if "gay" is a choice, are sexually repressed ppl who aren't on the pure hetero end of the Kinsey scale but have been forced hetero...
