Is the word "society" meaningful to you - in that do you have some sense of what types of groups or people are part of the same society and what aren't? Or is it a concept that's more arbitrarily drawn, a word you can apply to anything?

Bolaño, writing 2666, had a good musing on the idea, that "society" is a small body of individuals whose movements are loudly broadcast, among whom a small happening meant great things, whereas whole genocides outside of society might pass silently

Reminds of a bit in 2666 - Bolaño about the “size of society”. I’d’ve clipped less, but this is a pivotal point in the book and the prose of the whole 2 pages makes it better than gripping a tiny bit of pith.

it's entirely arbitrary. A society can be anything from an an entire world region to a friend group. Society just means a set of people grouped by some common feature. It's contextual.
