to those people "pet" is a misnomer that's just an informal but very situated family member If put in some absurd malthusian cosmic demon scenario where you have to pick between something you neurologically love like a family member or a stranger the choice is perfectly human

I’d be lying if I said I’d save the stranger. Would be interesting to see how much the poll results would shift if before choosing a button you saw a picture/description of the stranger.
