My dad has an officially tested IQ of 146 and believes evolution is a lie. Being smart often doesn't make you right, it mostly makes you more effective at believing what you believe.

There are good reasons to question evolution as the mechanism that produced discrete biological species. I recommend reading David Berlinski (an agnostic) if you're interested.

I would add that germ theory was also considered a wacko idea at one time. An idea’s perceived wackiness doesn’t make it wrong. In 2019 it would have been wacky to predict that a lot of the ppl supporting open borders would quickly change their positions within the next year.

Could it just be playing by coming up with bizarre but arguable ideas to spar with others trying to prove him wing, which he knows he is, or at least his claims are not the best fit to the available evidence?

But over deep time, billions of micro changes that result in better adaptation to the local environment lead to huge changes to descendents down the inheritance stream. All of life on earth has a common ancestor replicating mechanism hence significant commonality in DNA
