My guess is that wealthier ppl tend to have access to the nice nature trails, and when working class ppl do they don't call it hiking, they use nature to go hunting or do farming or something more 'work' oriented; hiking is more pure recreation?

as in; I've heard a *ton* of my college-educated programmer friends talk about hiking, but when I visit Idaho I don't really hear anybody talking about hiking, tho they talk a lot about other outdoorsy stuff

Hiking is going into the woods just to look. Up and down, great workout, drive home. Working class people go into the woods with a 4x4, ATV, or a rifle and a tag. Which is honestly way more fun.
