yeah, working classes tend to be happy with car culture. I've heard a ton of discussions about mass transit from my college-educated, white-collar job friends and not a single damn peep from anybody from my old working class life

Hm, interesting. I suppose I can agree that 'upper' probably talks about or thinks about mass transit more, but to me lower class is who actually uses mass transit. Maybe regional differences at play.

right; but also to be clear while income is correlated with class its not the same; the classic example is "starving artist" - super poor, but also upper class

A starving artist is more likely what is commonly understood to be Bohemian. They live in a class by themselves. Read the book "Class" by Paul Fussell. Lots of interesting ideas. In the end he he is an ass by trying to identify into a class he doesn't belong. But it's a fun read
