Team Blue are actually more conservative now than team Red. They define the status quo. Team Red is more Progressive or reactionary depending on your viewpoint.

I actually think the initial gut reactions do support the trope. It was the conservatives who had the immediate fearful reaction to Covid. It wasn't until it became an election issue and raw partisanship took over that the conservatives and liberals flipped positions.
