These results are consistent with most research on sexual coercion fantasies.
Lots of ideas from ev psych & ev bio are relevant here, such as hypergamy, patrilocality, tribal warfare, resistance-as-screening, mate choice for dominance, adaptive self-deception....

This extends directly from a hawk-dove model where males who choose hawk have more partners than males who choose dove but females who choose hawk do not have more partners than females who choose dove.

It might be a way to counterbalance our socialization. Men are socialized to be rough and women gentle, maybe they crave the thing they lack.

Evolutionary psych would suggest attracting a mate is the key motivation, in which case men leaning toward gentle because they're taught women are gentle, and women lean to rough because they're taught men are rough. They slide down the spectrum to potentially attract a mate.
