This is a great question. A lot of literature is out there showing obesity is socially contagious.
-
My social circle right now is too narrow to give an answer. Most of my non-family relatives moved away at beginning of COVID. Part of reason why I am so miserable.

Obese people having more obese children is mostly genetic, so it's not the obese parents setting a bad example/teaching poor habits,

I'm 6'9 260lbs I run 5 miles a day most days, I have a resting heartrate of 54 bpm but at this height I've weighed 197lbs the bmi scale says I'm overweight and I don't argue it, but my friends believe the bellcurve ruins my results and that I'm fit as exceptions/extremes.

My take has been BMI is a great way to measure a country's health but not best for individual health. Testing individual health, height, weight and use a tape measure for waist size, hips size, chest size. You can't record that for a country but works for individuals.

Age is a consideration. No one in my family is overweight. But I'm 55 and most of my & my husband's friends are overweight simply because the over 50 crowd trends that way in the US. At 30 we didn't have any overweight friends.
