you can't disentangle this from the moral issue. the situation is complicated but moral outrage around porn, especially sex trafficking, is *absolutely* one of the key players here. About a third of Americans want porn to be illegal!

if you were like hey, in this culture a third of Americans think porn should be illegal and 61% say it's morally wrong, but this has nothing to do with the pressures behind a porn site banning porn, I'd be like ok u got evidence?

Payment processors pulling out of pornhub was in response to sex trafficking panic. the BBC investigation shows the news was trying to paint OF as sexually exploitative. And every day I get strangers telling me I'm a whore and a shitty person for my job. This is a big movement.

You can see this elsewhere in how other countries have instituted regulations around sex work like the Nordic model. Has nothing to do with surveillance, everything to do with people treating sex workers as exploited victims who need saving from the bad johns.

It might be connected to other things too, like I wouldn't put it past some shady part of government interested in getting a lot of IDs on file, but at the very least they're using other ppls moral outrage as a method to do it
