I agree, though I think it's good for the sound bite to include the fact the genetics and childhood diet probably play very large roles too. That doesn't tell you how to gain/lose weight, but that the difficulty of both can vary a lot by person.

I'd say pretty much A for healthy people. I'm not a dr. so I can't really comment further. There are medications, such as the one I'm on that cause weight gain. In extreme examples, if someone stops eating, they do eventually start shrinking. That supports position A firmly.

Caloric intake and proper deficit with some exercise works for most, but there are underlying issues and stages of life that may complicate that (Diseases of the thyroid, if a woman is having periods or in menopause). Most would benefit from exercising and not gorging themselfs
