School as it currently exists is one of the worst things about civilization. If I had to choose between stopping global warming or ending all school (with decent alternatives) I would probably end all school.

Such as? It's not even remotely realistic to expect most people to homeschool their kids, and without compulsory education, many low income children wouldn't be educated due to neglect or other factors outside their control.

It's net good that every child, outside of serious development issues, is required to learn the basics of reading, math, science, and social studies. While you can debate the structure of compulsory education, the fact is that a facility run by educators where kids go to learn 1/

Do you have specific ideas of non school communal learning? My parents read English at the second grade level so reading, English in general, everything from what chlamydia is to “bless you” being a phrase people say when you sneeze could not come from them.

Can we get high literacy rates without the *current* school system? Sure! I don't think anyone would say it's all that close to optimal (good luck reaching agreement on the flaws, though). Can we get high literacy rates without *a* public schooling system? Ehhh... I'm doubtful...
