while I'm not surprised by networking making art famous, the article appears to make no attempt to separate correlation from causation; I'd expect extremely good artists to end up famous and thus with good networks even if networks didn't help!

Indeed. Some of causation might be reversed, great artists attract diverse networks. Also possible, diverse networks might lead to deeper experience and better art. But the hypothesis laid out is also possible.
