I once debated a rationalist on this topic, and he couldn't give me a sound argument on how he could know that AGI presents a greater existential risk than other problems AGI is a bogeyman

AGI is sci-fi. It's just stupid to connect WMDs or similar weapons to an AI, as shown by WarGames (1983). More likely it will be a conventional WW3 being triggered by resource conflicts or climate change that will impact humanity the most in the coming decades.
-
Did you spend 3 or more hours before reaching that conclusion? (I ask because most serious discussion of AI as an existential risk doesn't resemble War Games at all.)

3 hours doesn't seem a good threshold to discriminate between who has a clue on the topic and who doesn't :p 3 months or 3 years seems more apt?

The only people who are worried about AGIs are people who have no experience with AI development. The much more pressing threats are the sort of physiologically manipulative AIs that social media sites and other tech companies are using right now.

What does "researching" mean? Since AGI doesn't exist, it seems like the best one could do is spend 3 hours making wild speculations. Watching YouTube videos and listening to podcasts doesn't count as "research" AFAIK.

Is this only about the AI itself destroying us (unlikely) or our inability to distinguish truth from deep fakes tearing apart social cohesion (reasonable threat)? When you say the end of human civilization, do you mean human extinction or the downfall of western society?
-
What you're referring to is not *generalized* artificial intelligence.
