Why should someone on minimum wage be able to afford a medium-quality 2-bedroom rental? Do we have no room in our society for people who don't need much more than a low-quality one bedroom? or even roommates? I've lived with roommates for years and it's great.

Not in any way. They just have income to spend on what they want beyond very basic necessities

People will have their family regardless of whether they can afford to, which is a great way to get a new generation of people who can't afford families. Trying to help people afford families is probably sound long term economic planning.
