Why should someone on minimum wage be able to afford a medium-quality 2-bedroom rental? Do we have no room in our society for people who don't need much more than a low-quality one bedroom? or even roommates? I've lived with roommates for years and it's great.

Not sure I follow - do you mean in terms of restricting people from sharing housing? If so then I completely agree - we should not restrict housing supply (beyond minimal level to prevent the worse externalities), and nor should we prevent people from sharing if they choose

But of course the ideal situation is that housing space is cheap enough that a single minimum wage worker can afford it, even with kids - and those who opt to take less space and use that money for something else can do so

They’re interdependent variables. Assuming your philosophy is right, letting go of the reigns on one without doing the same on the other risks worsening the systems.

This feels like it's got a fundamentally flawed assumption, as a lot of people don't have (or don't perceive) much choice about what financial/labor exchanges they engage in due to a weak negotiating position. Employers exploit desperation to get labor out of people for cheap.
-
Exactly. Some people will be “willing”/pressured into working for absolute pennies if there aren’t protections in place (we literally have seen this in the U.S. pre-labor rights movement).
