Why should someone on minimum wage be able to afford a medium-quality 2-bedroom rental? Do we have no room in our society for people who don't need much more than a low-quality one bedroom? or even roommates? I've lived with roommates for years and it's great.

I don't know why boarding with people is such a huge issue

People on minimum wage often have families--lot easier to live in a group house in your 20s.

I'd like to see some statistics on this. Anecdotally most minimum wage earners I've known in my life were teenagers, like me when I was earning minimum wage.

My $900 rent is literally half of my paycheck. I work minimum wage +50 hours a week. The only people I know in NYC who rent cheaper than that (even within a group housing situation) are people who are connected to independent coops.

I guess my point is…nowhere is affordable to live?

There's a very good SlateStarCodex post on this topic. I think it's how I found his blog

Simple as, no earn, only take. I want more with less effort because lazy. A job is not a career. You get what you earn. Just as previous generations did.

Because that standard is much harder to measure.

You can pull two bedroom house rents from databases in a way you can't for roommates.
