why isn't the standard "people on minimum wage can't afford a room in a group house"? is it cause everyone on minimum wage *can* afford a room in a group house, so the headlines aren't very exciting?

Why shouldn't they? Housing should get cheaper and more accessible with technological improvements in building over time, just like almost every other product and service. The only reason it hasn't is because our states restrict new supply of it.

restricting supply is stupid. also restricting what financial/labor exchange two consenting adults decide is best for them, is stupid. if we didn't restrict either, probably our standards of living would be even higher.

I think moving away from the language of “should” we can instead ask if they “could” given the correct land use policies. If so, then why not?

I was born in a place where min wage is enough to rent a shed, *and* moving away requires airfare. That's not most of the country though. Tbh it surprises me how stressed people get over basic needs on the mainland

I am somewhat mystified by why it is supposed to be shocking that the least-productive people society has chosen to permit employers to hire are unable to afford the hallmarks of a typical middle-class lifestyle

I think the argument is that single parents should be able to afford housing. Which is interpreted as minimum wage workers should be able to afford a 2br apartment
