You forget that schools are not only for (1) education, but (2) to acquire social skills too. Pace at school is deliberately slow–not every child is a fast learner. Thus, school also becomes (3)a place that evaluates every kid's intelligence on one scale.

When I went to high school for three months (as a lifelong homeschooler), this was the thing that struck me the most was the wasted time. I felt like I could have done the entire school day in 20 minutes at home. twitter.com/wesyang/status…

It sucked. It stole time for me that I otherwise used for my own learning and expression. I taught myself so many things I never ever would have had time to do with public school.

Yep. Astonishing what a kid can learn in a short time outside of the traditional classroom. Started teaching my homeschooled middle daughter Latin when she was 8. She grew up to major in Linguistics with concentration in Spanish + Portuguese +French.

As someone that went from an alternative, co-op k-8 program to a standard public highschool I realized I was taught more in my 5th grade class than in all of HS. No surprise I ended up in court for truancy 3 times.

Except for the part about learning to live with other people from different backgrounds. That requires time and rarely can happen with homeschooling.

It truly depends on the quality of your school vs the quality of your home teaching. There are plenty of fantastic and amazing public schools and a ton of parents who would be absolutely terrible at "teaching" at home. I say, go for the higher quality, whichever it may be.
