My now ex-roomate attacked me a month ago. But I knew being violent in return wouldn't do anything. I did record part of the attack, however.

I think it might have made sense to spesify in the question that what is meant (?) here is physical_ violence. The word carries different meanings to different people and I wouldn't be surprised if some amount of the "violent impulses" reported were for passive-aggression etc...
