Depends on which country's point of view we're looking at it from.... 1937, or 1939, or 1941... YMMV

wouldn't this depend? If you define the start to be invasion of poland, then 1939, but there was a lot of build up to that no?
Same with the end, if its the surrender of japan, then 1945, but im not sure everyone would agree that that was the end.
