It's a feature of being able to fit vague descriptions onto specifics and only paying attention to a narrow slice of such interpretations. Tarot and bibliomancy work the same way, which is to say that they don't actually work.

yes of course. but there is something that seems consistently and strikingly on point about astrology that goes beyond just self-identifying with the most salient characteristics. i don't know why. i don't want to believe

The human brain is really really good at pattern matching. I personally have experienced "miracles" when I was religious that I was absolutely convinced weren't coincidences (turns out, they were). You could run experiments to try to control for this though!

One possible experiment, have a bunch of people who know you read 5 different astrology predictions and see if they can guess which one is yours (More ideally, get like 10 ppl to guess all of each other's)

Order if your astrology predicts your day, get three outcomes in advance, don't look at them, have your day, and then look at the outcomes in hindsight and try to guess which one was yours. Repeat for a month, see if you have higher than 33% accuracy

the predictive power of a horoscope i am more confident is totally arbitrary, the correlations between zodiacs & personality type is what i'm interested in. not sure how much one is supposed to influence the other

Yeah then get some ppl who don't know their in-depth description, have a party where the descriptions are laid out, see if people can figure out which belongs to who without telling them.

I did this one with 2 friends - had someone read a section of a very in depth "time you were born" horoscope description for each of us, we tried to see if we could guess who belonged to which one, we failed
