I'm French, and the social security card is one of those things we always have with us such as ID and a drivers licence... What is the social security card used for in the US? It must be pretty pointless for people not to care where it even is.

I’ve got a “national insurance” card, I think it’s in my old bedroom at my Dad’s house. I’m not sure what it’s for, they could have just told me my NI number via a regular letter tbh...
