I'm pretty libertarian, and open to discussion around it; I've updated my views before and acknowledge there are weaknesses. But most people responding on twitter are making arguments based on significant misunderstanding or straw men of my libertarianism views.

right, this argument I respect *significantly* more. If people were like yeah, it is stealing your property, and that sucks, but the alternative is worse, i'd be like ok cool we can have a good conversation now

I think it’s a minor theft that is necessary so that you don’t have to worry about a majority of potential thefts, because the state can monopolize violence with that income and uses that monopoly to protect everyone from both bigger and smaller thefts.

sounds like Sam Harris is just redefining "theft" to erase an argument. If govt can "steal" property, and the only consequence is ppl lament it as "good theft" then you don't really have a different concept of property from socialists. Just a semantic quibble.
