I feel like I'm in crazytown when I express distress about taxation - literally people forcibly taking away your property - and ppl act like I'm the crazy one. Sure, you could argue that this forcible theft is worth it, and I'll respect that, but it's still not crazy to be upset.

So you'd rather privatize public infrastructure and pay a street toll every time you walk outside your apartment? Do you think that would actually work out if everyone pays the same and either poor people cannot leave the house anymore or nobody pays enough to maintain it?

I think you're failing to model actual incentives in this world. 1. likely building this stuff would be cheaper without government being influenced by corporate money 2. paying a street toll every time is inefficient/there's other methods 3. poor people still make roads elsewhere

      1. is a matter of debate, also did you really just argue for "instead of corporate money influencing a non-corporate government to some degree, corporations should just take over completely"? 2. still means "the maintainer of the street will have to be paid, probably by you"?

I think corporations are *way* more efficient than government. Way more; they can die, the government can't. I also think corporate influence of government is very bad and a flaw of government. 2. - Yeah, something like that.

I think governments shouldn't be efficient. They should be transparent and have plenty of roadblocks in any choice they make. That means I have time to fight their calls. Corporation-style efficiency is a bad thing for governance.

To be fair, most current governments are neither transparent nor efficient,so I guess we're both unhappy with the way things are,but we disagree on how things should be?

This is fine as a prior, but you should know that data doesn't bear this out. I looked into exactly this - https://www.strangeloopcanon.com/p/the-costs-of-efficiency …

In general, corporations are less efficient than governments. The US may be an exception (this is arguable) but if so that's because we have an unusually inefficient government compared to other advanced nations.

Yeah, entities that solely exist for profit, and wouldn’t make roads or post offices in non-profitable areas are totally more efficient. 90% of things you enjoy are because governments do them in spite of a profit motive. Like roads, the public commons, and public goods.

Arpanet, the internet’s basis was developed by the us military. A huge sunk cost. A company coming up at that time wouldn’t value the immense cost because it isn’t profitable. Efficient corporations are a total lie. Private fire departments? Those were terrible. Etc.
