For particularly valuable art, do insurers require (or give you more favourable terms) if you have it professionally framed than if you have it bare?

the little border around the art makes it stand out some, which can be nice especially if you have a light wall and a light painting, the contrast of a dark frame is good

Probably historical thing? Most art doesn't have pretty edges and hiding that with a pretty frame can help.

The structure to hold the glass in place might as well look nice.

This is why I almost always go with plain, square, black metal frames. They don't distract from the art.

I’ve made some paintings and they definitely look better with a frame. Plus I don’t have to paint the edges which can get messy. It does depend on the painting though, some styles tend to look great with no frame or a minimalist frame.

Sometimes framing is itself attractive and can add to the aesthetic of the piece and change how it makes a room feel. Often, I feel the same as you. However there are aesthetic purposes for framing: making a work stand out, emphasizing traits, the beauty of the object itself.

What's the utility gain of categorically not enjoying something? It strikes me as strictly *better* to try to appreciate that some picture frames are just fuckin' sick and worth appreciating on their own (or for their excellent match to the underlying picture, etc.)
