sorry im on a negative criticism streak here lately but honestly the absolute narcissism of having a disagreement with someone on ideological terms and taking the frame that you are 'educating' them, like where the hell is the epistemic humility

the only times it's acceptable to tell someone else you're educating them in a disagreement is when it's specifically about very clear, concrete, uncontested facts, or if they're making basic mistakes in a *class you are teaching*

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. The framework is busted. But there's a bigger problem: I actually just feel bad for all the people trapped inside a head that thinks this way. That must suck so much.

I’ve truly tried to empathize with that kind of arrogant thinking before.
No one is that dumb, right? Maybe it’s just an addictive way to think. It makes the world so simple, and navigable. Uncertainty is scary to those not used to it.

I think you’re missing the simple fact that most people do not understand differences in disagreement. I’d venture to guess that 75%+ people do not see a difference in disagreeing on an object-level vs meta-level of a discussion.
My point is it’s ignorance, not arrogance.

It's a good thing left-leaning people on twitter often tell you that it's not their job to educate you!

It all stems from a lack of empathy. People can’t possibly conceive that most issues are far more complex than a simple black/white issue, so “if you disagree with me, then you are wrong”. Opinion news channels and hiveminds on Twitter have only made this worse over the years
