knowing how to cope is good. knowing what is bad about the mechanism is also good. Some coping mechanisms aren't even bad... it's just that many people don't call those coping anymore

I think I dislike coping mechanisms because I don’t trust people to not keep using them forever.

And this is probably because I haven’t seen many examples of people finding more wholesome adaptations after spending a while with less wholesome ones. (Because I don’t know many people.)

It carries a connotation of "can't handle reality" but eventually you notice that not being able to "handle" reality is a totally appropriate reaction to any reasonable analysis of it.
