Yes I did. I consider the idea to be my life’s work and main vocation apart from graphic design to pay the bills.

Scammy commerical gurus bank on the folk theory of enlightenment as their main marketing conceit. They would not have any business if they were truly honest about the effects of self-realization on a person’s life.

I've talked to a number of people who imo think they're enlightened (or something close to it) in a... sort of self help way, but also whatever it is they've been doing does actually seem to have improved their life.

My sadhana period included relatively regular entheogen use, so I’m not totally against it so much as concerned that folks lose their desire to think critically, and that’s a first step into the realm of delusion, IMO.

Oh sorry to clarify, I didn't mean these ppl were using entheogens, though some were; most of them did meditation and some had full on guru teachers

A different angle on the same story. Believe a guru can improve your life and you can experience an improvement, but by way of a placebo-like response. It’s how very BAD gurus can stay in business even after they’ve been busted. Since folks are helped, they can’t see the problem.

Idk? Like I agree with you a lot on gurus not helping people get enlightened, but also sometimes I feel like they do also help people in other ways, because they confuse enlightenment with those other ways.
Like, imagine if you had a therapist who thought that being super mentally healthy was enlightenment, and then did therapy on someone under the guise of enlightenment. They're wrong, but also the client gets a lot of therapy.

Ofc this is kinda extreme example and lots of gurus don't even help like therapy does

"You adopt a worldview provided by the network of concepts made available by [a guru], and this helps you along the path of your life by providing a sense of purpose, relationship with the world around you…”
